In this chosen family of dreamers and disruptors, who will rise to the top and take on the world?

RISE is an electrifying feature documentary with exclusive access into Western Sydney’s ballroom scene, centred on the lives of LGBTQIA+ communities and the iconic West Ball - the night where everything is on the line.

In Western Sydney - a character in itself - where racism, homophobia, & transphobia intersect, our cast navigate daily life under pressure, while celebrating their individuality. We capture the blood, sweat, & discipline behind the spectacle: closed-door rehearsals, chosen family dynamics, triumphs, & setbacks. Here, the urban landscape becomes both backdrop & battleground.

Following a core cast of queens from rival voguing houses, RISE moves through this underground world, where performance is both personal expression & political rebellion. In the lead-up to the 2027 West Ball, we embed with our cast, their chosen families, and biological elders from communities that have not always accepted them. The stakes extend far beyond trophies: to walk is to be witnessed; to win is to exist - loudly and unapologetically. The energy in this untapped world, on and off the stage, is palpable.

Through deeply personal stories, RISE reveals a deeper truth: ballroom is a battle for acceptance, validation, and the right to shine in a society that too often treats us like moving targets. Our cast navigate cultural pressures at home while forging new identities within chosen families. As expectations build, urgent questions emerge: what happens when you must sacrifice so much to be the person you see in the mirror? And what does it take to rise in Western Sydney - when you risk losing so much?

Blending intimate verité with stylised interviews & cinematic sequences that capture the raw physicality & visual intensity of ballroom, RISE is a visceral, authentic portrait of a community refusing to be silenced - an intergenerational story of multicultural resilience, resistance, & radical joy.
