This is a state of emergency. Across America, LGBTQIA+ people are caught in a fierce and deeply unexpected battle over how to keep themselves safe. On one side are the Pink Pistols, the world’s first LGBTQIA+ pro-gun organisation, arming queer people to defend themselves against hate and violence. On the other are Gays Against Guns, are fighting to restrict firearms and end the culture of violence they believe puts LGBTQIA+ lives even more at risk. Both claim the same goal: to keep queer people alive. With unprecedented access inside both movements, award-winning filmmaker Patrick Abboud embeds with these opposing forces to explore the fault lines dividing a community under threat. Behind closed doors, he meets the activists, survivors, gun owners and organisers whose radically different ideas about safety, freedom and resistance reveal a far more complicated fight than it first appears. What happens when a community threatened by violence turns on itself - fundamentally disagreeing about how best to fight back? GAYS WITH GUNS is an urgent feature documentary and accompanying investigative podcast about what it means to be queer in an increasingly dangerous climate — one where hard-won freedoms are being rolled back like never before— and the extraordinary lengths people will go to protect their right to exist. Provocative, intimate and deeply human, the project explores one of the most confronting questions facing LGBTQIA+ communities today: when the world feels increasingly dangerous, how do you move through it safely when you’re a moving target? The feature and podcast are being developed from a short documentary Patrick Abboud produced for The Feed on SBS. GAYS WITH GUNS is currently in funded development, with production scheduled for Q4 2028.
